The third annual Downtown's Going Green Festival is taking place Saturday, but this year's event has a slightly different focus.
In the previous two years, the event was purely a small St. Patrick's Day celebration, but this year EXIT Realty, which founded the event, is partnering with Bettering Our Local Downtown to put an environmentally friendly spin on the holiday.
The eco-themed parts of the event will include environmentally friendly displays, paper shredding services, ink cartridge recycling, home energy efficiency tips and eco-friendly skin care, according to BOLD's Web site.
But the Downtown's Going Green Festival duals as a St. Patrick's Day celebration for families. Children will enjoy finger painting, face painting, and children's books. Also on-site will be Crimestoppers and McGruff the Crime Dog.
One of the two main performers, the Cripple Creek Cloggers, of Burgaw, has canceled.
"Their transportation fell through," said Kathleen Frazee, BOLD program manager.
BOLD is trying to find replacement Irish dancing, clog dancing or Irish music group for the festival, but there are difficulties finding one available so close to St. Patrick's Day, said Frazee.
The other main performance will proceed as scheduled - the New River Harmony Men's Barbershop Chorus. The chorus is the Jacksonville chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a group dedicated to harmonized vocals.
More than 60 local organizations and businesses have signed up to participate and will offer anything from sales to informational materials.
The Jacksonville Model Railroad Club is hosting an open house at 236 New Bridge St. from 1 to 5 p.m. in conjunction with the event. Several local businesses are having sales to promote the event.
The festival will be from 1 to 5 p.m. between 600 and 715 New Bridge St. The two blocks will be closed from 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
The festival is free and open to the public. Attendees can wear green to promote the environment and St. Patrick's Day.
